词源 | sweaters. The first garments called sweaters were heavy blankets fashioned to fit around a racehorse’s body that train- ers in the early 19th century used to induce profuse sweating during a workout on the track. The word is first recorded in this sense in 1828 and it was another 30 years before sweater was used to mean flannel underclothing that athletes wore when trying to work off weight. Finally, in 1882, the word sweater was applied to a woolen vest or jersey worn in rowing or other athletic activities, the direct ancestor of the sweater we know today. |
