Jenny Lind. One of the less sensational P. T. Barnum attrac- tions was Jenny Lind. The incomparable showman brought his Swedish Nightingale to America in 1850 for a concert tour, the golden-voiced operatic soprano giving 95 concerts in 19 cities and grossing some $712,000—with over half a million being Barnum’s share. Jenny Lind, at the height of her powers, be- came the most famous singer of her time, due in large part to Barnum’s hoopla. Her name and nickname are only rarely heard today, but were once commonly used to describe a gifted singer, and many fashions of the day, including a carriage, were named after her. There were rumors that Barnum and the singer were romantically involved, but she married composer Otto Goldschmidt in 1852, the couple later living in England. She died in 1887, aged 67. |
