词汇 | old fuddy-duddy |
词源 | old fuddy-duddy. A stuffy, fussy, old-fashioned person, ei- ther old or young, who often fusses over minor details. The ex- pression was first recorded in 1904 and was mainly confined to Maine and other parts of New England, but is now heard na- tionally. The term’s origin is not certain, but some suggest that it derives from the English dialect word fud for buttocks, old fuddy-duddy (duddy added for rhyme) referring to someone who sits around on his duff doing very little, fussing with de- tails, etc. |
