Roman noir, from the French roman, “novel,” and noir, “black,” literally means a black novel, generally a whodunit that closely resembles a gothic novel in its atmosphere of doom and often gloom. Other romans include roman policies, a detective story; roman à clef; roman- feuilleton, a novel published in installments; and roman-fleuve, a series of novels with the same character. Film noir literally means a black movie (dark subject matter and atmosphere), its name suggested by roman noir. The word film itself is not re- corded until 1905. See movie. |
