词汇 | romanticists and classicists |
词源 | romanticists and classicists. When in 1831 the French in- spector general of theaters censored passages in Victor Hugo’s Hernani that were disrespectful of the monarchy, a literary war ensued in which romanticists supporting Hugo took sides against the classicists. There were pitched battles for weeks in- side and out of the theater. Professional claques were hired by the classicists, and Théophile Gautier led romanticist volun- teers, urging them to take their stand “upon the rugged mount of romanticism, and to vainly defend its passes against the as- sault of the classics.” It was a costly victory for the romanti- cists; many were injured and at least one young man died in a duel. |
