Liberty Tree (Elm); Liberty Hall; Liberty Stump. A tree that grew in Boston from which effigies of unpopular people were hanged during the protests over the Stamp Act in 1765. The ground under the tree became known as Liberty Hall. In 1775 the British cut the venerable elm down, and for a time it be- came known as the Liberty Stump. Soon after Liberty Trees were being planted all over the country, some say in almost every American town. Most of them died from the disease that struck elms early in the 20th century. |
