praying mantis. The English were calling Mantis religiosa the praying mantis since at least 1706, when this name for the green or brown predatory insect is first recorded. Also called the praying locust, it is so named because of the position in which it holds its forelegs, as if in prayer. It is a beneficial insect in the garden, as it eats many bugs destructive to plants. |
