词汇 ku klux klan
词源
Ku Klux Klan. A secret organization that arose in the South after the Civil War to preserve white supremacy. From 1865 to 1877 the name was often applied to all secret political organiza- tions with the same purpose. The term derives from the Greek kyklos, circle, plus klan, a variant spelling of clan. Since 1915 the Klan’s official name has been the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and the organization has directed its words and actions against Jews, Catholics, and the foreign-born as well as African- Americans. An old story holds that the name of the organiza- tion is based on the sound of rifle-bolt being operated.
