pop goes the weasel. The children’s song “Pop Goes The Weasel” (ca. 1853) by W. R. Mandale is the source for this phrase. The refrain goes: “Up and down the City Road, / In and out the Eagle, / That’s the way the money goes—/Pop goes the Weasel.” The Eagle was a popular London pub or music hall of the day, while weasel referred to a hatter’s tool, and pop was a contemporary term meaning “to pawn or hock.” |
