词汇 | champ at the bit |
词源 | champ at the bit. An expression that has been used figura- tively since the late 17th century to describe someone impatient or anxious while waiting—like a horse ready to run, champing at the bit in its mouth and stomping the ground. Both champ and chomp mean “to bite upon or grind,” chomp probably de- riving from the earlier champ for reasons unknown. |
