chap. The word chapman, for “a wandering peddler,” lives in the language long after the last chapman has passed from the scene. For the British term chap, “fellow or man,” as in “he’s a good old chap,” is simply an abbreviation of chapman—a good chapman, or chap, became in time a good fellow. The old En- glish word chop, “to barter,” gave us both chapman and cheap. |
