poor white trash. Lower-class white people; similar in mean- ing to poor white, but a stronger term. The offensive term goes back at least to the early 19th century, when we find it in Fran- cis Kimble’s Journal (1833): “The slaves themselves entertain the very highest contempt for white servants, whom they des- ignate as ‘poor white trash.’ ” Terms like poor white, red neck and peckerwood are often slur names. |
