词汇 | opera |
词源 | opera. An Italian word that comes from Latin opera meaning “work.” It is a 17th-century borrowing that seems to have first been recorded by British author John Evelyn: “They sometimes entertain the people [of Sienna] with ‘operas’ as they call them.” Opera has been with us since the end of the 16th century, the first opera house built in Venice in 1637. This combination of drama and music is sometimes melodramatic and may never seem sensible to some, for, as Auden said, “in sensible situa- tions people do not sing.” |
