词汇 | opsimath |
词源 | opsimath; opsigamy. A rare word that should make a come- back with recent interest in the aged and the problems of grow- ing old. An opsimath is a person who begins to learn or study late in life, the word deriving from the Greek for “late in learn- ing.” Formerly, the word was often used in a derogatory sense, to suggest a laggard, but there is no reason why it shouldn’t be applied to old people learning new things in new fields. Opsiga- my, a rare related word, is marriage late in life, an act that the Spartans punished with flogging but which is common today judging by all the opsigamists around. |
