oomph. Movie actress Ann Sheridan (1915–67) was dubbed the “Oomph Girl” for publicity purposes in 1939, making this word for sex appeal familiar to millions of Americans. But oomph goes back at least 40 years, first recorded by poet Paul Laurence Dunbar in Gideon (1900). The word is an echoic coinage that, according to Dr. Robert Chapman, suggests “the gasp of someone hit hard by . . . a transport of desire.” |
