golgotha. A cemetery; a place of martyrdom; a place of tor- ment or anguish. The reference is to the crucifixtion of Jesus as told in the Bible (John 19:17–18): “And he bearing His cross went forth into a place called the place of the skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: where they crucified him.” Golgotha is located outside Jerusalem and may be the site where the Church of the Holy Sepulchre stands. It may have originally been an execution place for criminals whose bodies were picked bare by animals. The Latin word Calvaria is the equivalent of Golgotha and gives us the word Calvary, meaning the same. |
