词源 | copperhead. Northerners sympathetic to the southern cause during the Civil War were called copperheads after the poison- ous “sneak snake” of that name that strikes without warning and is so named for its copper color. The term was coined by a New York Tribune editorial writer on July 20, 1861, and is still used today to denote “an enemy sympathizer.” |
