Despite TV sitcoms like The Beverly Hillbillies, the word hillbilly is a derogatory name for hill people or high- landers, a designation, insulting at best, that has in the past provoked fights to the death. Hillbilly is first recorded in 1900 and usually implies laziness, ignorance, and stupidity. High- landers don’t mind being called “hillbillies” by other moun- tain folk, but they do object to flatlanders or “furriners” using the term.
