词汇 | hindenburg line |
词源 | Hindenburg line. A World War I fortification on the French- Belgian border, running from Lens through Saint-Quentin to Rheims. Though credited to Field Marshal Paul von Hinden- burg (1847–1934), the strategy and most of his victories have often been considered the work of his chief of staff, General Lu- dendorff, his assistant throughout the war. Hindenburg’s full name was Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg. After the lost world war, he defeated Adolf Hitler in the 1932 German presidential elections, but soon af- ter, no longer in full possession of his faculties and warned by sinister advisers of a “socialist plot,” he appointed Hitler chan- cellor. Before reversing himself about Hitler he had quipped: “That man for a chancellor? I’ll make him a postmaster and he can lick the stamps with my head on them.” |
