词汇 | hippopotamus |
词源 | hippopotamus. The ancient Greeks thought the hippopota- mus looked like a horse and, since it spent so much time in the water, called it “river horse,” from the Greek hippos, “horse,” and potamos, “river.” British historian Thomas Macaulay wrote: “I have seen the Hippo both asleep and awake, and I can assure you that, asleep or awake, he is the ugliest of the Works of God.” In South Africa army vehicles have been named for ap- propriate animals since about 1977. The hippo is a troop carrier and is used against land mines. It is not, however, an amphibi- ous vehicle as the real hippo is. |
