commando. This term was adapted by the British during World War II when they established their specially trained commando units to raid enemy territory. It derives, however, from the Portuguese word for “small commands that raided native villages in South Africa,” a word the Boers borrowed when they used similar tactics to wipe out thousands of bush- men in their villages. |
