词汇 coke
词源
Coke; cola. Coke, or Coca-Cola (both registered trade- marks), was invented by Atlanta, Georgia, druggist Dr. John S. Pemberton in 1886, and is so named because its original in- gredients were derived from coca leaves and cola nuts. Coke is also slang for cocaine and for this reason the Coca-Cola Com- pany long avoided use of this name—especially because, up until 1909, Coca-Cola did contain minute amounts of cocaine. While the Supreme Court declared Coca-Cola and Coke exclu- sive trademarks, cola was ruled a generic word that anyone could use. Coca-Cola’s slogans “The pause that refreshes” and “Coke is it” are also well known. In 1985 a Mr. Frederick Koch (pronounced “Coke”) of Guilford, Vermont, got tired of peo- ple pronouncing his last name “Kotch” and changed it to Coke-Is-It. Coca-Cola objected to the use of its trademark, but finally reached a settlement with Mr. Coke-Is-It, letting him keep his new name. For the record, the actual coiner of the name Coca-Cola was Pemberton’s bookkeeper, Frank M. Rob- inson, who invented it in 1893. In those early days Coca-Cola was advertised as the “Esteemed Brain Tonic and Intellectual Beverage.”
