keep your fingers crossed. Making the sign of the cross has long been thought to be effective in averting evil, but the use of crossed fingers as a symbol of the cross is American in ori- gin, probably originating as a superstition among blacks in the 17th century. The practice was also thought to bring good luck and resulted in the expression to keep your fingers crossed, as well as the belief among schoolchildren and others that a lie told with the fingers (or toes, or legs, etc.) crossed “doesn’t count.” |
