keep your eye on the ball. Many sports could have spawned the American expression meaning “be closely attentive.” Baseball, tennis, golf, and basketball are all candidates, but the saying seems to have derived from the exhortations of college football coaches to their charges at the turn of the cen- tury. To be on the ball, to be vitally alert or in the know, is ap- parently an offshoot of this phrase, even though in baseball it has been said of a pitcher who has a wide variety of effective pitches. |
