词汇 | kemble pipe |
词源 | Kemble pipe. In 1678 Titus Oates fabricated a story about a Jes- uit papist plot that would assassinate England’s Charles II, among other Protestants, and put the Catholic duke of York on the throne. As a result, many Catholics were persecuted, and some 35 died by mob violence or by legal hanging. Among the latter was William Kemble, who calmly smoked his pipe and chatted pleas- antly all the way to the gallows. The liar Oates was merely, though severely, flogged and imprisoned until he was pardoned and pen- sioned by William III. All poor Kemble got out of the affair was the naming in his honor of a large pipe like the one he smoked. |
