toss in a blanket. Tossing someone, usually a girl, in a blan- ket has been an amusement among young people at beaches in relatively recent times, but the practice, at first a rough punish- ment, goes back at least five centuries. Shakespeare was the first to record blanket tossing, in 2 Henry IV (1597): “I will toss the rogue in a blanket.” Twelve years later Ben Jonson used blanket as a verb to describe the practice. See blanket; wet blanket. |
