词汇 sleep at the bottom of the ocean
词源
sleep at the bottom of the ocean; sleep with the fishes. Dead, killed, assassinated. In the Academy Award–winning movie The Godfather (1972), the acting Corleone boss, Santino, or Sonny, is sent a large dead fish wrapped in the bulletproof vest of his Mafia family’s chief enforcer, Luca Brasi. “It’s a Sicilian message,” one of his capos tells him. “It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.” In Mario Puzo’s novel The Godfather (1969) the expression varies some: “When he came back he was holding Luca Brasi’s bulletproof vest in his hands. Wrapped in the vest was a huge dead fish . . . ‘The fish means that Luca Brasi is sleeping at the bottom of the ocean,’ he said. ‘It’s an old Sicilian message.’ ” A humorous play on the words is sleeps with the ge- filte fishes.
