slam dunk. Dunk simply meant to shoot a basketball through the goal in the 1930s when the term is first recorded. But in the mid-1960s tall players developed what is known as the dunk shot by leaping above the basket and stuffing the ball in. The slam dunk came soon after, this a more theatrical version of the dunk shot in which the ball is slammed down through the hoop. Slam dunk has come to mean any “sure thing,” as in, “We’ll win tomor- row, it’s a slam dunk.” See also basketball.
