Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (1879–1953). It is often for- gotten that the communist dictator was a writer, the author of five books and the first editor of Pravda. Born Iosif Vissario- novich Dzhygashvili he took the last name Stalin, “man of steel” in Russian, on joining the Russian revolutionary movement. Ironically enough, his first book was an argument in favor of self-determination for oppressed nations. |
