Joltin’ Joe. A nickname for New York Yankee centerfielder Joe DiMaggio, one of baseball’s greatest players, who hit safely in 56 consecutive games. The popular song “Joltin’ Joe DiMag- gio” was written in his honor. DiMaggio was also called the Yankee Clipper, both for the way he “clipped” the ball and for his grace as a fielder, moving as effortlessly as a clipper ship. He made even the hard catches seem easy. |
