Jonathan apple. The Jonathan apple, named after Jonathan Hasbrouck, an American judge who died in 1846, is fifth in or- der of commercial importance in America. It is a late fall- ripening apple, bright red and often yellow-striped, its round fruit mildly acid and the trees bearing it very prolific. The Jona- than, grown mainly in the Northwest, is but one of numerous apple varieties commending their growers or other notables. The Gravenstein, Grimes Golden, Macoun, and Stayman are only a few others that come to mind. See also micha rood’s apple. |
