joss. Joss is pidgin English for a Chinese house idol or cult image, while a joss house is a Chinese temple, and a joss stick is an incense stick burned before an idol. It seems that early Por- tuguese explorers, on asking the Chinese what they called such idols, were invariably answered with the Portuguese name for God, Deos, which sounded like joss to them. |
