Tom Thumb. This term, often applied to a “little person,” as many “dwarfs” prefer to be called, and to little children as well, has its origins in fairy tales of old, in which Tom Thumb was the size of a man’s thumb. However, its modern use is due in great part to “General Tom Thumb” (Charles Sherwood Strat- ton, 1838–83), whom American showman P. T. Barnum exhib- ited in the mid-19th century. |
