词汇 | tironian notes |
词源 | Tironian notes. Marcus Tullius Tiro, the man who invented the ampersand (&), introduced it as part of the first system of shorthand of which there is any record. A learned Roman freedman and amanuensis to Cicero, Tiro invented Tironian notes about 63 b.c. in order to take down his friend’s fluent dic- tation. Though a rudimentary system, Tiro’s shorthand saw wide use in Europe for almost a thousand years, outlasting the Roman Empire. The ampersand, sometimes called the Tironian sign in Tiro’s honor, was a symbol for the Latin et, or “and.” Taught in Roman schools and used to record speeches made in the Senate, Tiro’s system was based on the orthographical prin- ciple and made abundant use of initials. Ampersand, first re- corded in 1837 by Canadian humorist Thomas Haliburton, is a contraction of and per se and. |
