词汇 | i’ll tell you what i’m gonna do |
词源 | I’ll tell you what I’m gonna do! A saying that became fa- mous nationwide after its use by Sid Stone playing a pitchman on comedian Milton Berle’s Texaco Star Theater. Stone rolled up his sleeves and played a street hustler on a segment of the television show every Tuesday night from 1948 to 1954. How- ever, the very similar I’ll tell you what goes back to Shake- speare, both phrases meaning roughly, “I’ll tell you something, or I’ll make a deal with you.” Milton Berle (1909–2002), televi- sion’s first star, introduced a number of popular expressions on his show, including the nonsensical “what the hey!”; “good evening, ladies and germs”; “I swear I’ll kwill (kill) you”; and “God, I wish I’d said that, and don’t worry, I will.” As for jokes, Berle said he knew 200,000. “Uncle Miltie’s” program was im- mensely popular. In his autobiography the comedian wrote: “In Detroit, an investigation took place when the water levels took a drastic drop in the reservoirs on Tuesday nights be- tween 9 and 9:05. It turned out that everybody waited until the end of the Texaco Star Theater before going to the bathroom.” |
