词汇 dog
词源
dog. First recorded in 1050 but probably born before then, dog is an early example of a “native” invented English word not borrowed from any other tongue. Before its introduction, the Teutonic hund had been the Old English word for the canine. Then dog (docga) first appeared in English as the name for a now unknown breed of powerful hunds, the word dog eventu- ally passing into other Continental languages. Some famous dogs in history include: Argos, the dog of Ulysses; Buddy, President Bill Clinton’s dog; cerberus, guard of Hades; Check- ers, President Richard Nixon’s dog, the subject of his famous Checkers speech; Diamond, Isaac Newton’s dog; Fala, Presi- dent Franklin Roosevelt’s dog; Flush, Elizabeth Barrett Brown- ing’s dog; Lassie, of movie and TV fame; Pete the Pup, a star of the Our Gang pix; Pluto, Mickey Mouse’s dog; Rin Tin Tin, the first great canine movie star; Rufus, Winston Churchill’s dog; Sandy, Little Orphan Annie’s dog; Snoopy, Charlie Brown’s dog; Toto, Dorothy’s dog in The Wizard of Oz. Dog is com- monly heard today, mostly in black English, as a synonym for man, as in “Yo, dog, where you goin’?” Before this, again in black English, it meant a brutal or treacherous person, espe- cially a male, while in sports talk it meant an unaggressive, spiritless boxer. Long before, American mountain men used dog as an affectionate form of address for one another, much as youngsters do today.
