词汇 | itch |
词源 | itch. Itching of various bodily parts has been thought to indi- cate different cravings for centuries. An itching foot, for exam- ple, purportedly means a craving for travel, and itching lips mean a craving for a kiss, or that you’re about to be kissed. In Julius Caesar Shakespeare used an itching palm as a synonym for the readiness to take a bribe, making Brutus say to Cassius “. . . you yourself/Are much condemned to have an itching palm.” Shakespeare was the first to record the words, but long before him an itching palm probably signified a craving for money or was taken as an omen that a person was about to re- ceive money from an unexpected source. An itch has been syn- onymous for sexual desire since 1660. See also seven-year itch. |
