词汇 | snail |
词源 | snail. Since at least 1592 a snail’s pace has meant “exceed- ingly slow,” but until recently no one knew just how exceed- ingly slow that was. Recent studies have shown that garden snails travel at about two feet an hour, or one mile every three months or so. In the expression draw in one’s horns, horns refers to the horns of the snail, because the garden pest draws in its horns and remains in its shell when threatened with danger, or when weather conditions aren’t favorable. The snail’s actions do suggest someone who draws away from a situation and takes no action while reconsidering the mat- ter. The expression is first recorded in the early 1300s and clearly indicates that the garden snail is its source. See alsoslug. |
