islets (islands) of Langerhans. German anatomist Paul Langerhans (1847–88) may be the only person to have a group of small islands named after him. However, these islets are en- docrine cells throughout the pancreas that secrete insulin and glucagon, the malfunction of which causes diabetes. Dr. Lang- erhans was, in 1869, the first to describe the cells. |
