Italian aster, Italian clover, Italian honeysuckle—all innocent terms describing innocuous things. Compared with groups like the Dutch and Irish, the Italians have indeed fared well, linguistically. Sometimes home garden- ers curse Italian ryegrass, not realizing that it is an annual grass that won’t come up the next year, but that’s about the extent of Italian’s infamy.
