词汇 make waves
词源
make waves. Team players in any sport usually don’t make waves, that is, they don’t make trouble, and this expression might come from the sport of sculling, in which all of the row- ers’ strokes must be smooth and uniform, not choppy. But the phrase possibly comes from an old joke about a person who ar- rives in hell and hears thousands of lovely serene voices sing- ing, though he can’t make out the words. Amazed at such peace and tranquility in the nether regions, he approaches closer only to find the chorus of hell standing up to their chins in a sea of excrement, singing endlessly to each other, softly, serenely, carefully, “Don’t make waves, don’t make waves.” Which is a far better story than the sculling one, anyway. One early way to de- pict sea waves in a stage play was to assemble dozens of extras on hands and knees under a large blue or green cloth. The ex- tras (or “human wave machine”) would then move about under the cloth heaving backward and forward to suggest the move- ment of the sea.
