词汇 euphonious
词源
euphonious. Greek euphonos, sweet-voiced, gives us this word for pleasing to the ear or an agreeable sound, especially in a word’s phonetic quality. Euphonious dates back to about 1765, and since then many authors have nominated their choice for the most beautiful (euphonious) English word, even when real- izing that such a choice is so subjective as to mean nothing. Carl Sandburg, I believe, chose Monongahela, which rolls like a long river off the tongue, while James Joyce felt that cuspidor was the most euphonious word in the language. M words such as melody and murmuring are great favorites among many peo- ple, as are lullaby, golden, silver moon, cellar door, and dawn. As his favorite French word Baudelaire chose hemorroides (hem- orrhoids). A poll taken by the National Association of Teachers of Speech gave the ten worst-sounding English words as ca- cophony, crunch, flatulent, gripe, jazz, phlegmatic, plump, pluto- crat, sap, and treachery. Another favorite is diarrhea.
