This expression is first attested in Florence Barclay’s 1909 novel The Rosary, where a character says: “I knew I wanted her; knew her presence made my day and her absence meant chill night . . .” Make, however, had been used as a verb meaning “to secure the success of ” (as in Clothes make the man), since the 16th century. Today go ahead, make my day has come to mean “give me the chance to do what I’d like to do—to hurt you badly!” The expression was popularized by the Clint Eastwood character Dirty Harry (a tough police detec- tive) in the movie Sudden Impact. |
