词汇 | wholesale |
词源 | wholesale; retail. Both of these terms have their origins in the cloth trade. Wholesale initially meant to sell whole pieces of cloth, while retail derives from a French word meaning to cut up (tailor, similarly, means “a cutter”), retailer coming to mean anyone who sold anything in small, cut-up lots. According to the real estate brokers Cushman and Wakefield, the world’s most expensive location for a retail store is Manhattan’s 57th St. from Fifth Avenue to Park Avenue, with rents averaging $700 a square foot annually. New York’s Fifth Avenue between 49th and 59th St. is in second place ($650 a square foot), and third place goes to Causeway Bay in Hong Kong ($523 a square foot). |
