词汇 | whole shooting match |
词源 | whole shooting match. Large crowds gathered at frontier shooting matches in America to watch marksmen compete in hitting targets, snuffing out candles, etc. The whole shooting match thus came to mean “the whole crowd in attendance” and, by extension, “the totality, everything, the whole thing.” An earlier British phrase the whole shoot, meaning the same but with a different origin, may have strengthened the usage. |
