词汇 | chum |
词源 | chum. Chum, for “close friend or pal,” came into English only in the late 17th century, probably from British university slang. It possibly is a shortening and slight alteration of chambermate (roommate), but there are no quotations to prove this. Chum, for “fishing bait,” possibly comes from a Scottish dialect word meaning “food”; in any case, it derives from a different source from the chum meaning “pal.” |
