词汇 | bummers |
词源 | Bummers. A Southern nickname for Union general William Tecumseh Sherman’s soldiers as they made their way plunder- ing and burning across Georgia in Sherman’s fabled March to the Sea during the Civil War. They were also called “scabs,” “huns,” “scavengers,” “hateful,” “despised,” “fiends,” “red- handed devils,” and “human fungi.” But Bummer became the only word more anathema to Southerners than that hated word Yankee. After looting a town named Barnwell, the Bum- mers set it on fire and jokingly renamed it Burnwell. See sherman’s hairpins. |
