bungalow. In India a bangala is a one-story thatched or tiled house surrounded by a verandah. Its name literally means “of Bengal,” where such dwellings are common. The British in In- dia borrowed the word, which changed to bungalow over the years, applying it to any cottage of one story. In America a bun- galow usually has one-and-a-half stories and a gabled roof, among other characteristics, but the word is also used here loosely to mean any small dwelling. |
