词汇 | old age is a shipwreck |
词源 | old age is a shipwreck. Overhead recently in a health club. If it isn’t a proverbial saying, it should be, but I have no evidence of this. Walt Whitman’s poem “The Dismantled Ship” tells of “An old, dismantled, gray and batter’d ship, disabled, done,/ Af- ter free voyages to all the seas of earth . . . /Lies rusting, mould- ering.” Writers have long used shipwreck figuratively. John Udall, for example, wrote in A demonstration of the truth of that discipline which Christe hath prescribed (1588): “. . . hee haue made shipwreck of a good conscience” (meaning he has suf- fered the loss of his good conscience). |
