词汇 | christmas tree |
词源 | Christmas tree. The Christmas tree is an ancient German custom, though Germans call the small decorated firs or spruces they use a Weihnachtsbaum, or “holy-night tree.” German set- tlers brought the custom to America, where English-speaking settlers dubbed it the Christmas tree as early as 1838, the first recorded use of the term. Americans thought the trees idola- trous at first, but soon realized the German immigrants weren’t worshipping the tree and adopted the custom themselves. One of the oddest of nicknames belonged to Christmas Tree Mur- phy, an American of a century ago who killed an opponent in a brawl with—you guessed it!—a Christmas tree. |
